  1. WHAT WE DO AND HOW WE DO IT NICOLA O’LOUGHLIN

  2. About CSI • We are civilians • We are trained to a common UK standard • We attend anything suspicious • 58 operational force wide • 10 based in South Gloucestershire

  3. Fingerprints • Primary source of evidence • Not necessarily the best!! • Can be recovered from almost anything • Best from smooth shiny surfaces • Cannot be dated

  4. Footwear • As individual as fingerprints • Conclusive evidence • Not just soles • Recovery potential at almost every scene • Brilliant for intelligence

  5. Tools • Most crime scenes involve a tool… • Screwdrivers, crowbars, garden implements • Tool marks can be cast and compared • Conclusive evidence • Also useful for DNA

  6. DNA • Can come in many forms • Saliva • Blood • Hair • Sperm • Sweat • Unique to all • Usually not visible • Very easy to contaminate

  7. Crime Prevention • Lock doors and windows • If you have an alarm, use it! • Don’t leave empty boxes outside • Use timer switches • Use your neighbours • Don’t advertise your absence

  8. Something funny… The lighter side of crime… • Burglar uses Face book during burglary… • Burglar leaves his mobile behind… • Burglar gets stuck in window…
