  2. Arts & Entertainment Biggest Movie Hits Some of the big-budget films included Jaws (1975), Rocky (1976), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and Grease (1978). Popular T.V. Shows The majority of the television shows of the 1970s were based on the times of the 1950s such as Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley. Others celebrated the simple pleasures of living on the frontier.Another popular T.V. show of the 70s was The Love Boat. (I hope you enjoy its theme song on the following page) Happy Days was a popular television show in the 70s.

  3. Sports In the 70s, tennis was a very popular sport among men and women. One of the best tennis players of that time was a woman named Billie Jean King. In 1973, she accepted a challenge from Bobby Riggs in a man vs. woman match.. Riggs was no match for Billie. After the win, women’s tennis was taken more seriously. Perhaps the most unusual sports figure of the 1970s was Evil Knievel. He was known for his legendary stunts such as jumping over cars and buses. In October 1975, Knievel successfully jumped over 14 Greyhound buses. Like many of his other stunts, this one was televised. 52 percent of Americans were watching his latest performance.

  4. Lifestyles, Fashions, and Fads • In the70s, choosing a lifestyle was confusing for many people. One of the most confusing issues was religion. Many were drawn to gurus, or spiritual guides from India. Another group of people that everyone noticed were the people who dressed in robes and chanted at airports and on busy downtown streets. • Some of the fashions in the 70s included wearing ragged denim blue jeans, cotton T-shirts, and having long hair. Often, their jeans were decorated with peace symbols. For the men and women that wanted to stand out, a designer named Calvin Klein created jeans with rhinestones or silver studs.

  5. Politicsat Home & Abroad - Now that the weather is clearing, jet fighter- bombs roar overhead most of the day, plastering the ridges with napalm that burns off the shrub trees and elephant grass where the NVA are dug in. But somehow the enemy troops seem to survive, and during the day, they can be seen moving through their trenches. For weeks, one North Vietnamese, armed with a .50-caliber machine gun and known to the Marines as “Luke the Good,”has been ripping off his deadly bursts at low-flying aircraft from a foxhole barely 100 yards outside the lines. No amount of napalm has been able to burn Luke out. -Merton Perry March 18, 1968 Those were the words of just one of the brave soldiers that fought during the war. Though the war was a tragic one, it did finally end in 1975. The Vietnam War took 58,169 American fighters.

  6. Science & Technology During the 70s, important milestones were achieved in the exploration of the solar system. After the historic landing on the moon in 1969, NASA launched several more successful moon landings, ending with Apollo. In May 1973, another important event took place for the American space program. Skylab, the United States ‘ 1st space station, was launched. It was designed to orbit Earth at a distance of 300 miles. Aboard the station were astronauts that conducted scientific & medical experiments. Skylab was manned by three research crews before the astronauts left the space station and returned to Earth in February 1974. Skylab was supposed to be able to continue to send space information back to Earth, to help NASA continue its space research for many years to come. In 1979, however, Skylab’ s orbit began to deteriorate. In July of that year, parts of the space station crashed into parts of Australia and in the Indian ocean. Fortunately, no one was hurt. But the possibility of using Skylab to continue space exploration was over.
