  2. Statistics is the science of collecting, describing, and interpreting data.

  3. Data can be collected and put on multiple kinds of graphs. Common graphs used are the bar graph, circle graph, and line graph.

  4. The Bar Graph Data: 100 randomly-selected tenth-grade students and their letter grade on a test

  5. The Circle Graph Data: 100 randomly-selected people and their preferred movie genre

  6. The Line Graph Dollars (in millions) (Per month) Data: sales revenue of a business, per month

  7. A population is a collection, or set, of individuals, objects, or events whose properties are to be analyzed A qualitative variable is a variable of the data that describes or categorizes and element of a population A quantitative, or numerical, variable is a variable that quantifies an element of a population

  8. A population Possible people to be surveyed

  9. A quantitative variable A quantity variable consists of numbers or a set of values, such as surveying a group of 15 blondes, 15 brunettes, and 15 redheads

  10. A qualitative variable A qualitative variable can involve only surveying a group of blonde-haired people or a group of brunette-haired people or a group of red-haired people

  11. Population can also be broken down into a sample, finite population, and infinite population. InfinitePopulation Sample Finite Population Population

  12. Sample A sample is a subset of a population

  13. Finite Population A finite population is a population whose membership can or could be physically listed Example: a small group of people

  14. Infinite Population An infinite population is a population whose membership is unlimited. Example: the population of everyone on Earth

  15. These are the simple facts of Statistics.
