  2. Kurt’s life • Born November 11, 1922 • Fifth generation German-American • attended Cornell University • served as assistant managing editor and associate editor for the student newspaper, the Cornell Daily Sun, and majored in chemistry.

  3. Kurt’s life continued • enlisted in the U.S. Army • army sent him to the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the University of Tennessee to study mechanical engineering • May 14, 1944, Mothers' Day, his mother committed suicide

  4. Kurt’s life in the army • private with the 106th Infantry Division • captured by Wehrmacht troops on December 14, 1944 • Was a leader in the prison because he could speak some German. He was beaten and had his leadership taken away after he insulted the guards. • Later awarded the Purple Heart

  5. Kurt’s life after • married his childhood sweetheart, Jane Marie Cox • They separated at 1970, no divorce until 1979. • Then married photographer Jill Krementz • Raised 7 children ( 3 with Jane)

  8. Kurt’s Death • Was a heavy smoker • died on April 11, 2007, in Manhattan, following a fall at his Manhattan home several weeks earlier which resulted in irreversible brain injuries.
