  1. Title Agronomic and economic evaluation of weed management methods in organic herb and vegetable production Paul Kristiansen, Brian Sindel and Robin Jessop

  2. Background • organic farming & weeds • need for information • organic weed management project

  3. Field sites New England Tablelands

  4. Methods • crops: lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Imperial Triumph) & echinacea (Echinacea purpurea Moench [L.]) • 4 weed control treatments + control • measured final weed and crop biomass, and treatment costs • derived gross and adjusted crop value

  5. Weed control treatments hand weeding paper mulch tillage hay mulch

  6. Results: weeds in lettuce

  7. Weeds in echinacea

  8. Lettuceyield gross crop value adjusted crop value

  9. Echinaceayield gross crop value adjusted crop value

  10. Key findings • weed control • hand weeding & mulches best • effect on crop yield (GCV) • hand weeding & hay best, others vary by crop • cost of treatments • mulches and hand weeding expensive • cost effectiveness (ACV) • lettuce: tillage & hand weeding, control too • echinacea: hand weeding & hay mulch

  11. Implications • Lettuce • low input, cheaper methods were cost effective for short-term crop • but … longer-term impact on weed seed production? • Echinacea • high input, expensive methods were the most cost effective

  12. Acknowledgements • RIRDC and UNE for funding • Staff at farm at Yarrowitch • Staff in Agronomy & Soil Science, UNE
