  1. Los acentos • “I see a little diagonal dash over some letters in Spanish words, and my teacher gets all bent out of shape if I forget them…what are they?” • They are called accents. You will see them ONLY over vowels, never consonants: á é í ó ú • The are diagonal, to the right, and they are placed directly over the vowel – like pointing down to it.

  2. Los acentos • Accents don’t belong in between letters (s’abado → sábado) • Know where they go, and make it clear that you know it belongs there: a’ ‘a á • If an “i” has an accent, the accent mark takes the place of the dot: artístico

  3. Los acentos • Make sure that when “dotting” all lowercase “i”’s and “j”’s, the “dot” doesn’t look like an accidental accent: artístlco artístico

  4. Los acentos Only 1accent per word

  5. Los acentos What are they for?

  6. Los acentos Reason #1 - Pronunciation: In English, you just have to know how the word is pronounced… In Spanish, you need to know the vowel sounds, but you also get an accent mark that visually tells you what part of the word to stress.

  7. Los acentos Examples: politics…política assess…acesoría telephone…teléfono

  8. Reason #2 - Meaning: Tulápiz= your pencil vs. Tú = You El = the vs. Él= He

  9. Reason #2 - Meaning: ¿Qué? = What vs. Que = That Papá = Dad vs. Papa = potato
