  1. NIR Online, The Manufacturer and Maintainer’s View Mick Underwood

  2. NIRs – Any interest to us? • Myths? • ‘NIRs are to do with Operations and Operators!’ • ‘If you maintain them correctly, there won’t be a problem!’ • ‘It was a good train when we delivered it!’ • ‘NIRs are a big stick to beat up Suppliers with’

  3. New Build and Refurbishment: Feedback • We want to be the best • We want to understand our Customers and their needs • We need feedback about what happens to our products after they are delivered • We have product liability risks which we need to manage • How can you be best – if you don’t know what best is? • NIRs are an essential part in this understanding.

  4. Train Maintenance • We need to be an Informed Supplier to the Railway Industry • We need to take on and help our Customers manage emerging issues that confront them • In some cases we author NIRs when issues are discovered with fleets we maintain • And seek to close them out promptly and responsibly with soundly thought out solutions agreed with our customers • If NIRs are unable to be closed out immediately, containment and contingency plans are agreed and implemented with our customers. • However, there has to be a clear understanding contractually about who is responsible for the costs that arise when things go wrong. Data collection, Additional Maintenance and Design Modifications are often unbudgeted costs

  5. So how does NIR Online help? • It will provide up to date, ready access to all of the NIRs in an easily accessible form • It complements the train manufacturers / maintainers own databases which are used to track whether issues affect trains we directly work on • It will be easy to search for similar precedents when ‘new’ issues emerge • It will help bring us suppliers closer to our Customers, and help us to make well informed decisions
