About the Beaufort Wind Scale

The Beaufort Wind Force Scale was invented in 1805 by a sailor called Sir Francis Beaufort, so it was named after him. In those days the strength of the wind was very important for sailing ships. The wind scale was really to help sea goers describe the wind strength in a common format. In later years the scale was modified to describe conditions on land.

The wind scale is used by many weather watchers around the world.

There are important terms and phrases that have specific meaning and tell people how fast the wind is.

Advanced Users Notes

This is a fairly simple presentation. Users may wish to embellish the file by improving the image files, adding sounds and video clips.

By adding more pictures images the animations would be made smoother. This file was kept modest because of lack of space on the CD Rom.

Weather watchers may be interested to learn more about school weather work by looking regularly on the Naace and Becta TRE web sites.
