  1. Welcome to the ACE 2005 General Assembly Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), 4-8 May 2005 Dr. Pascal Mimero ECTN Association ESCPE Lyon, France

  2. What is EChemTest ?It is made for … ?

  3. What is EChemTest ? The European Chemistry Test … • Electronic Testing platform online developed by the ECTN • Aims to deliver electronic tests to evaluate your knowledge and skills in various fields of Chemistry • Funded by the European Commission within the Socrates and Thematic Network frames • Further details ? visit our website at: www.EChemTest.net www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  4. It is made for … ? Enables to monitor … • Student exchange program • Chemistry knowledge evaluation in the native language • Chemistry understanding in a foreign language • Professional career progression • Industrial mobility • Continuous education • Example: R&D in organic synthesis, analytical skills • Life Long Learning process www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  5. Tests available today Pre-University Levels General Chemistry 1 General Chemistry 2 University Chemistry studies Analytical Chemistry 3 Inorganic Chemistry 3 Organic Chemistry 3 Physical Chemistry 3 Over 2800 questions Development … Actual: Biological Chemistry Bio-Organic Bio-Inorganic Tomorrow starting now Level 4: University Chemistry studies in Organic Chemistry Possible in the future ? Chemical Engineering Environmental Chemistry Polymer Chemistry Domains: today & future www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  6. Paleo-chronology …few words about the ancient time

  7. Once upon a time … • It was in the year 1996 … … the “Objective 1” Socrates projects • 1997, Helsinki … fighting to convince people it could work ! • After hours of discussion, arguments and work with working groups … • After thousands of disappointing crashes with … “?” • 1998, the so called “Core Chemistry Test” was unveiled for the first time to the ECTN Audience at the plenary meeting held in the beautiful island of Rhodes in Greece ! www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  8. Once upon a time … • 2000, last Windows CDRom issued with the old platform • 2001-2003, the EU funding break !! • Renamed as “EChemTest”, the European Chemistry Test • First set of data transferred to the Perception platform, and prepared to the wild Internet technology • 2003-2004, beta tests (demo and certification database) • 2005, finally unveiled … again in Greece, in the nice place of Thessaloniki • Already - Only 7 years old ;-) … Happy birthday EChemTest !! www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  9. … EChemTest today !!

  10. Team Organization www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  11. Structure & Frame • Session of Test • One hour session composed by up to 30 questions • Question • One question represent one specific topic • Question taken at random from a question bank of libraries • Topic • Choose according to the Chemistry Core Curriculum • Agreed at the European level • Difficulty • Increasing throughout the test • From introductoryto intermediateand advanced grade of difficulty www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  12. “Demo / Training Test” Static sample session Prior taking any of the certification test session Full set of European Languages currently transferred from the old platform Freely accessible online after registration “Certification Test” Dynamic session at random European Chemistry Certificate at pre-university or at University levels of studies issued by the ECTNA English versions in operation now and only available in approved testing centers Sessions monitored and taken under controlled conditions ECTNA members are awarded with a free access to certification tests 2 Categories of tests www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  13. Website access … www.echemtest.net www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  14. Tests online www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  16. Technical and Business stuff

  17. Quality insurance: Content • All questions of a single topic according to the European Common Core Curriculum frame … • Equivalent as content to each other • Equivalent as scoring • Equivalent as the grade of difficulty • Questions developed at the European level by an international team www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  18. Quality insurance: Certification • Delivery controlled condition (time limit, scheduled sessions, personal account, number of attempts, …) • Monitoring of the certification test session (testing centers) and Records of each sessions on the Server • Encrypted session, protection by Login/Password • Backup of the data www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  19. Quality insurance: Technology • Developed with the commercial software QuestionMark Perception www.questionmark.com (providing Industrial and Academic clients for evaluation, certification, assessment worldwide) • Following the CAA Software Guidelines • Encrypted session, protection by Login/Password (administration level, end-user level, database storage) • Material delivered online “virus-free” / Symantec virus database automatic update • Backup of all databases (questions, sessions, results) www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  20. Testing centers • The EChemTest Certification sessions are delegated to EChemTest centers officially recognized by the ECTN Association. • In order to be recognized by the ECTN Association the EChemTest Center (full Association members or foreign bodies) has to fulfil pre-requisites related to : • The context and logistic (computer room, maintenance, …) • The examination conditions (secure network, band width, …) • The examination procedure (monitoring, ID control, …). www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  23. EChemTest and Eurobachelor ? • 2 of the current projects coordinated by ECTN … • EChemTest: electronic automatized platform of tests in chemistry evaluating the knowledge in chemistry and the chemistry understanding in foreign languages, at pre-university and University study levels, by no mean will replace any national examination or diploma, but will help students and teachers with self-assessment and individual academic progression monitoring for example. • Chemistry Eurobachelor: a label delivered to accredited Universities running the Bologna Process with their own National examinations, providing a DS and the individual student progression. www.ECTN-Assoc.org

  24. And now … On behalf of the ECTN Network and Association, I officially invite our friend and local organizer to join me
