  1. ACADEMIC PLANNING FOR EIGTH GRADE

  2. Eight graders take four core subjects: English Physical Science World Geography Math Math 8 Algebra I Intensified Algebra I Intensified Geometry

  3. Eighth graders have two elective periods. Eighth graders may begin/ continue their study of a foreign language by selecting from the following: Arabic Chinese French Latin Spanish.

  4. Language classes meet daily all year and earn high school credit. Arabic and Chinese will occur during the school day and may be offered via distance learning if enrollment is not sufficient to staff at school. Students seeking to enroll in the second level of a language should see their teacher for initials.

  5. Eighth graders may begin/ continue their study of a musical instrument by selecting one of the following: • Beginning Band • Experienced Band (this includes Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble). Tryouts for Wind Ensemble will be conducted in mid to late March. • Orchestra

  6. Eighth grade exploratory courses meet daily for a Semester and include: Visual Art Theatre Arts Guitar Life Management time and money management Basic clothing construction Cooking Explore careers

  7. Technical Education • Identify tools , machines and equipment • Design and build carbon-powered race cars • Problem solving to improve the world • Digital Input Technologies • Touch typing • Word processing to create documents • Maintaining a personal budget • Discuss new and emerging technologies and their workplace applications

  8. Computer Applications and Internet Technologies • Demonstrate an understanding of the computer operating system • Identify how to change system settings and install and remove applications • Demonstrate the use of various Internet search engins and portals • Explore the use of technology in various careers

  9. Taking Charge • Develop awareness of personal choices and challenges • Learn appropriate relationship behaviors through practicing positive communication and conflict resolution skills • Participate in a parenting activity simulated through the use of a computerized doll • Explore careers through job-seeking strategies and job requirements

  10. Yearbook – year long course by application only • In this course students produce the yearbook • Students learn about publication writing and production

High School Courses for Credit Students may begin earning high school credits in 7th grade Courses that earn high school credit: • Foreign Language • World Geography • Math (beginning with Algebra I) You will have the option at the end of each year to not take the credit AND the grade so that it will not be included in the GPA

  16. Technical Diploma Requirements Standard Technical Diploma One credit must be in foreign language or fine arts. Four credits must be in Career and Technical Education with a concentration in a career. If the career concentration has a State approved assessment then the assessment must be taken to receive credit. Advanced Technical Diploma Foreign language credits must be 3 of one or 2 of 2 languages. If 2 of each is chosen then an additional fine arts or CTE credit must be earned. The 3 required elective choices must be CTE courses.
