  1. Adult Services Subcommittee Presentation to Autism Commission • Monday February 28, 2011

  2. Preliminary Recommendations: • Recommend that DPH initiate prevalence and incidence studies to determine numbers of children and adults with ASD in MA. • Establish uniform data collection systems for state agencies which serve adults with ASD. Collect data for those applying for services, those denied services, those denied services who prevailed on appeal and those who qualify for services but are on waitlists.

  3. Recommendations (Continued) • Create a cross-departmental governmental agency that will closely monitor, supervise, and provide case management services across the lifespan and spectrum. This new agency will also now be charged with overseeing and providing services to adults with Asperger’s Syndrome, HFA, and other related conditions. • Ensure DMH eligibility includes those with ASD. • Expand DDS eligibility for adults with ASD and consider IQ and functional skills criteria. IQ of 70 or above should not preclude DDS services. • Create a resource list for families accessing and/or receiving adult services and include federal and state funding sources.

  4. Recommendations (Continued) • Create a list of adult ASD model programs in other states, with particular attention to PA. • Study the feasibility of implementing a federal autism waiver program for ASD adults in MA. • Create specialized employment supports/knowledge for adults with ASD. • Create a wide range of housing supports/alternatives for those ASD adults with intensive needs and those with minimal needs.

  5. Recommendations (Continued) Implement a formalized community training program for first responders, judges and court officials, police and mental health workers. Ensure adequate and flexible family supports for families with adult ASD members living at home.
