  1. ***PLEASE COMPLETE ALL OF APEX 4B & COLLEGE AND CAREER I & II BEFORE STARTING THE SENIOR PROJECT.  READ THIS ENTIRE PACKET- PAGE BY PAGE!*** SENIOR PROJECT ENGLISH 4B REESE EDUCATION CENTER 2018-2019 YOU MUST HAVE 5-6 PICTURES OF YOU TURNED INTO MRS. SPEAR BEFORE CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR THIS PROJECT. TURN THE 5-6 PICTURES OF YOU INTO MRS. SPREAR!!!! NAME: _________________________ TEACHER: _______________________ DATE: _________________

  2. CAREER PATH… • Your Senior Research Project is a direct reflection of you and the career path you wish to obtain in your life. At the conclusion of your project, you will have a portfolio that includes: your career choice information, research on an institution of higher education where you can receive your training, a college application, a financial aid application, scholarship applications, a professional resume, a letter of inquiry, and a job application. A professional job interview will also be required.

  3.  ORDER OF COMPLETION: • FIRST:  (APEX)- complete all of 4B • NEXT:  (APEX)- complete “COLLEGE AND CAREER I & II” classes  • THEN: complete the activities in the senior project binder • LAST: complete the checklist on the back of the binder Study guides, practices, journals and discussion MUST be kept in your English and College and Career file folders and submitted to your English teacher. Activities and writing assignments for the senior project binder must be placed in the binder and in order. Completion checklist must be initialed by the appropriate teacher/principal before leaving REC as a graduate.

  4. WHERE DO I BEGIN? • Don't know how much money you will need to earn in the future? Don't know which occupation to choose? No problem! • Go to www.texasrealitycheck.com • Complete “Start Your Reality Check”. Complete it the first time as your “dream” life then complete the second time as your “reality” life Print both results. Place them in your binder. • Write a paragraph  (Word document) describing your experience and what you learned from this website. Make sure you write in complete sentences and give specific examples. 

  5. MAKE A CHOICE! TIME TO CHOOSE YOUR CAREER! • What type of training or education is required to obtain your career choice? • What are the job duties? • Salary (average salary earned)? • Benefits (health insurance, retirement plan, vacation, etc.)? • Drawbacks (travel, moving, stress, long hours, etc.)? • Job outlook (difficult or easy to get this job, many or few openings) ? • Write an essay (Word document) describing your career path. Pretend that your reader doesn’t know anything about the career. Use a lot of description and be specific!  

  6. NOW WHAT? • Look for and print off a college checklist of things you need to do in preparation to enroll. Feel free to create your own. • Go to www.applytexas.org: Create an account: print a screen shot of log in information, review admissions application. • Register for the SAT/ACT (see Mrs. Pharr for assistance) • Register for TSI (see Ms. Rogers for test dates) • Print off a Degree Plan for your particular major. • Approximately how much will it cost per semester to attend this college? How much will it cost to earn your degree?

  7. NOW WHAT continued… Apply for TWO Scholarships: • 1. Wolfforth Lion’s Club Scholarship for Reese students • 2.  Frenship Foundation Scholarship (for Reese students • The link to these two scholarships can be found on the Reese homepage> Student’s tab> Senior Project – ELAR> Scholarships • Read the directions carefully! • DO NOT HOLE PUNCH! PLACE IN FRONT POCKET OF THE BINDER!!! • COMPLETED scholarship forms must be returned to your English teacher before ANY course credit is given!!! 

  8. ***Military, Workforce, or Other (not going to College): • 1. Complete a sample Loan Application for a new automobile. • 2. Complete an application to rent or lease an apartment/ house. MAKE SURE THE APPLICATION IS COMPLETELY FILLED OUT AND ACCURATE.

  9. WHAT’S NEXT continued… • Create a professional resume  • Use Microsoft Publisher  to find a resume template. Choose a template that best fits your career.   Keep resume information to one page!  • Include three professional references for potential employers to be able to contact. *Turn in a copy of your resume to your teacher (one copy in your binder) *You will also need a copy of your resume when you go to the office to fill out your application for the interview. Give the copy to Mrs. Craig or Mrs. Atkins after teacher approval .

  10. WHAT’S NEXT continued… • Write a letter of inquiry to a possible employer. • Reese homepage> Student’s tab> Senior Project – ELAR> Letter of Inquiry.

  11. VOTER REGISTRATION: • If you are 18, or about to be 18, fill out the voter registration form. • Reese homepage> Student’s tab> Senior Project – ELAR> Voter Registration.

  12. WHAT’S NEXT continued… Binder Cover • Decorate your binder with a collage of pictures depicting your career choice. • Include your name, career choice and English 4B on the cover.

  13. MOCK INTERVIEW PROCEDURES Take a copy of your resume to the Mrs. Craig or Mrs. Atkins in the office. • Employer (Reese Staff) will notify applicant (you) of the date and time of your interview. Write this information on the Completion Checklist • Dress professional • Arrive no less than 15 minutes early • Use appropriate interview skills • Show your knowledge of your profession and degree requirements • If you are unable to attend the interview, please call the REC office and reschedule the interview. • Bring your senior project binder and pictures

  14. MOCK INTERVIEW PROCEDURES Things to bring to the mock interview: • Research binder • 5-6 pictures to be used for graduation • Smiling face and good attitude!

  15. Sample Interview Questions: • What college classes will you have to take? How many hours? • What are the degree requirements? • What are the college entrance requirements? • What unique skills and talents do you have that would benefit the company? • What’s the one accomplishment you’re most proud of? Why? • Why should we hire you over the other applicants? These are just a few questions that may or may not be asked. Be prepared and confident!
