  1. Wednesday, March 21 Friday, March 25 1st Period - Any Report Cards, etc., to show me? There are 8 main types of POETRY, and some have other types of poetry as subcategories. They are: 1) Narrative Poetry = ___________________________________ 2) Lyric Poetry = ______________________________________________ 3) Dramatic Poetry = _____________________________________ I. Poetry that tells a story and has plot, characters, and setting Poetry that has musical quality and expresses the feelings of one speaker Poetry that presents a dramatic situation and the speech of a character

  2. 4) Free Verse = ___________________________________ 5) Haiku = ___________________________________________________ Poetry that does not use a regular meter. The Poet uses any rhythm and line length that suits the poem’s meaning. 1) A Japanese form of poetry that consists of 17 syllables. 2) Lines 1 and 3 have 5 syllables each and Line 2 has 7 syllables. 3) It’s usually about nature. Example: Haiku by Matsuo Basho An old silent pond A frog jumps into the pond, splash! Silence again.

  3. 6) Limericks = ________________________________________________ A humorous 5 lined poem with specific meter and rhyme scheme – a a b b a Example: The Zoo There once was an ape in the zoo Who looked through the bars and saw YOU! Do you think that it’s fair To give apes such a scare? I think it’s a mean thing to do!!! Funny, right???

  4. 7) An Epigram = ___________________________________ A short poem with a clever twist! Example: Epigram by Langston Hughes Oh, God of dust and rainbows, help us see That without dust the rainbow would not be.

  5. 8) Concrete Poetry = _______________________________________ A poem whose written shape looks like its subject! Example: The Sidewalk Racer or On the Skateboard by Lillian Morrison Skimming an asphalt sea I swerve, I curve, I sway; I speed to whirring sound an inch above the ground; I’m the sailor and the sail, I’m the driver and the wheel I’m the one and only single engine human auto mobile.
