Statutory Sector • Health care, including: • Primary • Including GP practices, well-women/men service • Secondary • In- and out-patient mental health services • Cardiovascular units • Spinal injury units • Fertility and maternity units • Head injury units • Child and adolescent services • Pain management • Services for older people • Hospices • Learning disability units

Statutory Sector • Social Care Settings • Adult Services: • Mental health • Learning difficulties • Physical impairment • Older people’s services • Generic intake and ‘one-stop shop’ centres • Children and family services: • Child protection • Family support • Children’s centres • Family therapy centres • Child and adolescent services • Sexual abuse support units.

Education • Primary education • Typically from ages 5-11 • Secondary education • Typically from ages 11-16 • Further education • Typically from ages 16-18, however, now including adult learners and degree level training • Higher education • Typically from ages 18-21, however, now including adult learners with increasing numbers returning to education in later life.

  5. Third Sector • Many and varied voluntary service settings, including: • Adoption services • Mental health services • Child and family services • Services for older people • Services for people with physical or learning difficulties • Services meeting a specific social or cultural need (e.g., for specific cultural groups, or groups defined by sexuality) • Services for specific demographic groups (e.g., young males, street workers, asylum seekers).

  6. Independent Practice • Counsellors and psychotherapists working self-employed • Will rent or buy premises, or will work from home • Will be responsible for all aspects of therapy provision, including: • Publicity information • Fees and contracts • Location of therapy • Services offered • Length of contracts available • Hours worked, and holiday periods • Insurance and self-funding for training (continuing professional development).
