  5. Tip # 1: Talk to Faculty • Talk to a faculty member in a class you enjoyed. • Favorite Class—Why did you enjoy it? What are you interested in learning more about? • Faculty’s Research Agenda—Review their website (MSU People Search often lists personal websites) • Do some basic research on faculty’s research area—become familiar with common terms • Analyze your strengths and areas in which you want to gain experience

Tip # 2: Search Key Websites • Venture, MSU’s on-line undergraduate research database: www.venture.msu.edu • Search by key words • Apply projects on-line • Request notification when projects posted • Undergraduate Research Website, www.urca.msu.edu • Tips for finding projects • Student showcases • Funding suggestions • National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/index.jsp • Small teams of undergrads work closely with faculty member on project • Stipend and often housing & travel costs • Hundreds of opportunities across the U.S. • Applications due early in spring term—check now!

  7. Tip # 3: Academic Advisors • Talk to your academic advisor. • Help connect you with faculty • Familiar with curriculum & courses that may have a research component to them • Junior/Senior Year—Independent Study Option

New Point System! • This year we are starting a brand new point system so that you can keep track of what you’ve been involved in more easily. • Be an active member and be eligible for scholarships and we’ll be your chords Senior year • These These will be updated periodically on the website • 3 meetings • 4 community service • 2 fundraising (items of the month are .5) • 2 BIG events: March to College Day, Integrity Event, RUSH, Relay for Life • If you are graduating in December or May, talk to Sarah after the meeting, she keeps track of the points

  11. Community Service Habitat for Humanity They still need volunteers for this week! Take pictures and get a point! Register 1. Go to servicelearning.msu.edu 2. Click on “Find a Service Opportunity 3. Click “Log on to our Website” 4. Sign-in using your MSU ID and Password 5. Click on “Engineering and Construction” 6. Scroll to “Habitat On-campus Blitz Build ME-010” 7. Click “Register 8. Follow the directs at the bottom of the page to Complete your registration

American Red Cross: Donating Blood • Will get participation for donating blood at any time throughout the semester • Upcoming blood drives on campus • Oct 13th: International Center • Oct 15th: Armstrong Hall • Oct 22nd: Gilchrist Hall • Lansing Donation Center: • 1729 E. Saginaw Lansing • Look up more locations and times at redcrossblood.org • Bring us your sticker or signed paper to get your point!

  13. White Hills Nursing Home • Help with Bingo Night, 4 people • October 14th, 3:00pm • October 18th, 3:00pm • Help with Trick-or-Treaters, 6 people • October 29th, 3:30pm 1843 N. Hagadorn Road 1-2 Hour commitment

  14. Up Till Dawn Letter Sending Party • Letter writing party to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital • Bring addresses of family and friends to send letters to • There will be raffles and prizes • November 15th, 5-11pm St. John’s 327 MAC Ave Can go for as long as desired

  15. Sparrow Pediatrics • Will be making crafts with the children currently receiving care at Sparrow Hospital • October 21st, 10-11am • November 9th, 10-11am • Need 3 people per day Sparrow Hospital 1215 E. Michigan Ave 5th Floor (Pediatrics play room)

Ronald McDonald House • Home away for home for families of seriously ill children who are hospitalized in the Lansing area • Will prepare dinner for families, need 4 people • October 29th, 5:00pm • November 15th, 5:00pm 121 S. Holmes Street Lansing, MI 48912 Dinner and cleanup will last until about 7:30

  19. March to College Day • We are bringing the students to campus for the first time ever! • This will be a Wednesday March 30, 2011 in the morning • Join a committee to help plan and organize the event! • If you have any questions contact • pfcsrocks@gmail.com

Fundraiser • Yankee Candle • Take a packet, we are fundraising for MARCH TO COLLEGE DAY with Holt Junior High School • Products will be delivered 2-4 after the orders are in, so they’ll be in time for Christmas • Collect payment at the time of the sale • Make checks payable to National Society of Collegiate Scholars • You much include the 6% sales tax in their order The profits will go toward the organization, providing scholarships for our members, and March to College Day! Orders are DUE: Wednesday October 27

  21. Induction • October 24, 2010 at 2pm in Business College N130 • Please note the location change. IT IS NOT IN BRODY • We’ll be having speakers and you’ll be eligible for a scholarship only available for newly inducted members • Dress is business casual

Scholarships • NSCS Board of Directors Award: October 30 (extended) • New York Life Excellence Award: October 30 • Induction Recognition Award: January 30 • Must attend and be inducted • OCTOBER 24, 2pm BCC N130 • Route 66: October 20 • Must attend the online viewing with NSCS November 4 • Register online for a ticket

Next Meeting • November 10 at 6:30pm in VetMed E100 • Item of the month: canned goods to be donated for Thanksgiving • We have a lot already planned for November, so look out for the calendar coming soon on the NSCS website • Next meetings topic: Interviewing • What do you want to hear about?
