  2. Old English System Units…

  3. Modern Units… Big Mac Index - a measure of exchange rates betweentwo currencies. It was defined by Economist's editor Pam Woodall to measure whether a currency is under or overvalued. She used a Big Mac because the burger is produced in about 120 countries. Kardashian A "Kardashian" is a unit of measure representing 72 days of marriage. This unit of time came in response to the 72 day marriage of Kim Kardashian to Kris Humphries. Twitter followers: Wheaton The Wheaton is a measurement of Twitter followers relative to celebrity Wil Wheaton. The measurement was standardized when Wil Wheaton achieved half a million Twitter followers, with the effect that Wil Wheaton now has 4 Wheatons himself. As few Twitter users have millions of followers, the milliwheaton (500 followers) is more commonly used.

  4. Why have Standards? Order of Magnitude - • The height of a classroom door • The length of an ant • The height of a can of soda • The distance to Nassau Coliseum • 103m • 100m • 10-2m • 10-3m

  5. Conversions… kg g m cm mm m mg cg km cm g kg 5kg = 5m = 5mm = 5mg = 5km = 5g = Dimensional Analysis - How many seconds are in a year?

  6. Scientific Notation- An electron in a conducting wire can travel at speeds of 5,652,000km/hr… Convert this speed to m/s and then into scientific notation. Why doesn’t the electron flow in straight line like a water molecule in a pipe?

  7. Standard Notation Scientific Notation 239,000 miles 2.5 x 108 24.8lbs .0000000015m 5.0 x 10-3m 2.39 x 105 250,000,000 2.48x 101 1.5 x 10-9 .005
