  2. Youth Impact • Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs role • Significant costs to local communities • Impact on attitudes and behaviors of local youth • Opportunities for parents and community members to take action

Major Findings • Alcohol • 1/3 of high school students and 15% of middle school students report using alcohol in the last month. • Tobacco • Cigarette use continues to decline due to coordinated efforts to educate and enforce age-compliance laws. Major Findings • Prescription Drugs • Juvenile arrests for pharmaceutical violations are nearly 3 times the rate of adult violations. • Illegal Drugs • Nearly a quarter of high school students have reported using marijuana in their lifetime. The Good News… 90% of local students feel that their families love and support them!

Adult Education & Parental Involvement What Can You Do? • Develop Parent Networks at area schools • Implement campaign to educate adults about laws regarding underage drinking • Secure personal supplies of pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and alcohol • Reinforce the trust children have that you love and support them

  9. Community Policies What Can You Do? • Develop formal social, community, and administrative policies that limit youth access to alcohol • Implementation of alcohol age compliance checks • Educate community members how alcohol and other substances are to be handled within the context of the various activities of an organization • Utilize coordinated networks between organizations to address youth concerns

  10. “Take Home Message” “We have a lot of opportunity here in Oneida and Vilas counties.” “Local surveys show that an overwhelming majority – 90% – of local students feel that their families love and support them.” “And three quarters feel the same way about their schools.” “Local youth are ready to listen.”
