STATISTICSDepartment of Justice • Over 2 million people incarcerated in jails or prisons • 16% suffer from a mental illness • 7 – 16% suffer from a serious mental illness • ¾ of this population also meet criteria for substance abuse/dependence • Most likely to have been homeless pre-arrest • Since 1982 federal, state & local corrections spending has increased 400%

RECIDIVISM PROBLEMS • Do not know where to go to get help • Lack of support system • Lack of basic needs & transportation • No money for treatment or medications • Homeless • Fail to maintain MH treatment • Gap in treatment • Increased risk of decompensating & reoffending • Perception of mentally ill individuals who offend

SERVICE PROVIDERS ROLECollaboration & Communication For your recently released client: • Know their probation/parole officer • Know their case manager • Keep open lines of communication • Seek out other types of providers for coordination of care • Be proactive – if you see decompensation contact officer or case manager

SERVICE PROVIDERS ROLE • Get to know other providers (non-profits, etc) • Know the services within the criminal justice system • Partner & collaborate with various types of providers to offer wrap-around services • Partner & collaborate with criminal justice providers • Advocate for your client and their needs

  7. ACCESS TO RECOVERY • What is ATR? • Who is eligible? • How does ATR work • What services are covered under ATR? • How do you become a provider?

COLLABORATION PARTNERS • County Jails • Community Corrections • Department of Corrections • Local Police Departments • Non-Profit Organization • Probation/Parole • ICJI/Related Agencies and/or Task Forces • Criminal Courts • Mental Health Courts • Bureau of Developmental Disabilities/FSSA Agencies • Public Defender Agency • Prosecutors Office • Local Missions • Health Departments
