  1. Technology takes over! Synth bands, early hip-hop & Dance and pure pop!

  2. Music technology advances... • The 1980s was an exciting time for music technology. Drum machines and samplers were becoming popular, New synthesisers were being developed, MIDI was introduced in 1982 making control of music technology easier, especially when Atari released its ST home computer which allowed MIDI musicians to start creating their own music. Also the first CD went on sale in 1982 – 28 years ago!

  3. Synth bands • Early analogue synths were awkward to set up and had several limitations. However once newer forms of synthesis were developed (such as additive synthesis and sampling) things became easier. Many bands took advantage of the new technology creating a whole genre of music based around synths and drum machines.... • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EHpozHn-QA Human League - Don't you want me 1982 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTb2rZ0SBg4 New Order - Blue Monday (TOTP Performance)

  4. House and techno • Other styles that developed during the 1980s thanks to new technology were early dance styles including House & Techno. Both styles were developed in America by Black musicians but became very popular in Europe. They can trace a direct link to Disco. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHp2KO8cUX0 Phuture - Acid Trax • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r7MjUDgZ0I Rhythm Is Rhythm Strings Of Life

  5. Hip – hop culture • Rap was born in the bronx New york during the late 1970’s by black musicians and is the music most associated with Hip –hop culture. The music is highly rhythmic often without melody and has socially aware lyrics to do with crime, sex and ‘bling’. Early artists include SUGARHILL GANG, RUN DMC and BEASTIE BOYS. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6gD_CwF5YM the sugar hill gang rapper's delight • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIbHPs_M55Q RUN-DMC - Walk This Way

  6. Pure pop • Many solo ‘pop stars’ came on the scene during the 1980’s, many who have managed to reignite their careers in recent years. These include MICHAEL JACKSON, KYLIE MINOGUE and MADONNA. Pop music was purely commercial with catchy tunes with teen-oriented lyrics. Most pop songs were written by the STOCK, AITKEN & WATERMAN production team. They wrote over 140 hit songs for artists such as KYLIE, JASON DONNAVAN and RICK ASTLEY. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9-brYm9qpU Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) - Megamix
