Marine litter

Marine litter

  • Plastic debris can be found littered on coastlines all across the world’s oceans, even on the most finest beaches.

  • Plastic is not biodegradable therefore plastic will not degrade as quick as other litters would. Plastic will degrade slower in the marine environment than on land. A normal plastic bottle/bag can take up to 450 years if left to degrade.

  • Sources of marine litter*:

  • 40.4% from the public – glass bottles buds plastic bags

  • 4.5% Sewage related Debris – what goes down your toile

  • 13.9% fishing litter – old nets

  • 0.7% fly tipping – bits of carpet sofas metal

  • 3.9% shipping – oil waste and ship waste

  • 0.2% medical waste – plasters and bandages

  • 36.3% non-sourced – boats litter from abroad
