The PT ducts were filled up to 60-70 % (As per code it should be 97% filled). Issue

Foundation size provided was 641 m2 as against the required 2720 m2. Silo wall thickness was 350 mm.

(Structurally sound, but because of the PT duct and the reinforcement, there was no space for pouring

concrete.) PT forces applied were 80 % of the hoop forces as against 60%. The PT ducts were filled up to

60-70 % (As per code it should be 97% filled).

As a result, the silo tilted, bulged and buckled at 28 mt to 40 mt. level, resulting in unsafe operating

conditions.

Challenge

The entire job was to be completed within 6 months and the work was to be carried out under partial

operating condition.

The problem of local bursting of concrete was encountered during repair.

A major part of work was carried out in summer where the ambient temperature was more than 50°C

Designed, modified material and methodology to achieve the desired results

Conducted trials on site

Grouting of the RCC shell done with high strength epoxies

Provided additional reinforcement

Patching of the damaged concrete section done with micro concreting.
