  2. Wikis and Basic Writing at MCTC • 6 English instructors piloted 8 sections of Paperless English 900 in Spring of 2011 • 7 sections on a wiki (PBWorks) • 1 section on Google docs • (One faculty opted out of the wiki a few weeks into the semester, citing technology issues) • Success rates:

Faculty Response Post-900/Wiki Pilot: “The area where I really saw a lot of positives was in that of student comments, feedback and editing/revision and discussion…the wiki created an environment where this ‘exploded.’ By the end of the semester, students were commenting on each other’s papers and reflective letters, reading and giving each other ideas even when I had not assigned it. It was like a virus—once you let it out, it infects everyone.” ~ 900 Pilot Instructor

Faculty Response Post-900/Wiki Pilot: “The many benefits include the de facto creation of a sort of hybrid environment, wherein students work on papers and I give them immediate feedback from wherever I am. Arguably this is not a lot different than having students emailing papers, but in fact it's a lot easier to manage. Papers are collected in one place  . . . as are my comments, and the online collection is vastly reducing the problem of earlier drafts going missing.” ~900 Pilot Instructor

  5. Students gave the wiki high marks for the following: • Ease of access to documents • Ease of creating multiple drafts • Ease of accessing instructor comments on multiple drafts • Ease of sharing documents with classmates and the positive aspects of this sharing for community building • Joy of learning something new about technology itself.
