  2. Brief history • Founded in 2001 • Category Events Max speed • Archimede I 2 people prop HPS 2002 2.9 knots • Archimede II 2 people prop ISR 2003, HPS 2004 n/a • Archimede III 2 people prop ISR 2005 5.225 knots • Archimede IV 1 person prop HPS 2006, ISR 2007, 2009 6.473 knots • Archimede V 1 person prop ISR 2011, EISR 2012 6.298 knots • Archimede VI 1 person prop ISR 2013 ? ? ? International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 3/20

  3. Archimede VI (1/3) International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 4/20

  4. Archimede VI (2/3) • Main innovations • New infusion-composite hull • Smaller, less surface/friction drags, faster • Polycarbonate window • Polyurethane fins by liquid plastic molding • Sonar • Higher construction efficiency • Low cost processes • Investments in tools • Looking for speed ! International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 5/20

  5. Archimede VI (3/3) International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 6/20

  6. Past events • 2 co-events VP • Communication • New & updated website (www.polyarchimede.com) • Use of social media (facebook) • Past events since ISR 2011 • Montreal Polytechniquevisibility and recruiting activities • Montreal Eureka 2012 & 2013 science festival • Montreal Classic Boat Festival • 2012 European International Submarine Races in Gosport, UK(with Archimede V) International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 7/20

  7. Budget 2012 - 2013 • Total budget : $ 16,000 • Travelling expenses : $ 6,000 • Scuba diving equipment : $ 5,000 • Power tools : $ 2,000 • Submarine materials : $ 3,000 International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 8/20

  8. Team members & competition crews • Archimede members • Competition crews • Dry crew • Preparation • Divers assistance • Reparations • Sub towing • Wet crew • Dive leader • Pilot • “Balancers” • Communication with dive & race supervisors International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 9/20

  9. Design – Hydrodynamic (1/3) • Hull - Hydrodynamic design • Optimisation from Archimede V • Based on NACA profile • Enough volume for systems • Minimum frontal and hull areas • Smaller cross section • Reduced chord line by accentuating theprofile curvature after transmission • Successive Ansys Fluent analysis • Propeller, shroud andpre-swirl stators • Same from Archimede V • Better fixation to hullfor changes & repairs International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 10/20

  10. Design – Hydrodynamic (2/3) • Hull – Sandwich composite construction • Wax finish • 2 x paint • 2 x primer • Putty surface corrections • 1 mat fiberglass fabric • 1 bidirectional fiberglass fabric • 1 mat fiberglass fabric • Corecell with epoxy resin, light weighted • 2 coats of mat fiberglass fabric • Epoxy resin paste with glass microspheres • 2 x primer OUTSIDE LAYERS INSIDE LAYERS International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 11/20

  11. Design – Hydrodynamic (3/3) • Hull – Composition • Sandwich composite : increased bending strength • Corecell A-foam (closed-cell nautical foam) for buoyancy • Additional materials to the hull • Polycarbonate for the window • Plastic, steel and polyurethane for the fins • Steel, corecell and epoxy fitting for the rear shaft • Polycarbonate “pucks” for crewing fixation • Hull – fabrication • Counter-mold (plug) • Mold • 2 x infusion hull halves with vacuum • Assembly of the halves with 2 additional vacuum infusions International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 12/20

  12. Design – Fins (1/2) • Fins – design • Removable 2 sets of fins • A – Control designed • B – Speed designed International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 13/20

  13. Design – Fins (2/2) • Fins – fabrication • Model -> Silicone rubber mold -> Polyurethane parts • Stronger top fin vs 3 other fins (less fragile) • 2-3 hours to get a new fin from scratch ! • Huge advantages over “traditional” composite fins • Faster • Cheaper • Higher surface quality International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 14/20

  14. Design – Mechanical (1/2) • Direction • One hand pilot control • Bike cables tightly linked to the fins • Better precision • Remember Archimede 5… loosely cables on big pulleys ! • Referencing system – during construction • Laser • Precise positions of inner systems • Referencing system – in competition • Visual control through 360 window • Sonar aid International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 15/20

  15. Design – Mechanical (2/2) • Drivetrain • Removable cassette • New cassette holder • New first stage shaft • Same ratio as Archimede V • Pop-up buoy and propeller nozzle International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 16/20

  16. Design – Mechanical (2/2) International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 17/20

  17. Conclusion • Sorry for the presentationdelay yesterday… We had some issues: • Pilot not coming due to medical surgery • Dive master burn out • VP-logistic cancelled 10 min before departure • 2 other members cancellation in the past two weeks • And last but not least… • Team leader in civil engineering! International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 18/20

  18. Conclusion • So… We continued our work on evenings at the hotel in order to finish the submarine ! International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 19/20
