  1. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  2. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  3. Interaction with driver’s physical condition (1) • Heart beat and Oxigen amount in blood: • Measuring point in gear stick and/or steering wheel integrated • Acoustical signals to get attention • Use existing technology such as in fitness machines • Supported by current state of the art technology • Medical diagnostic tool (confidential issues) • Calibration of heart beat range by a doctor • Smart Card to make these information portable

  4. Interaction with driver’s physical condition (2) • PIEV (Perception, Interpretation, Emotion, Volition): • Sensors to track braking, road side and steering behavior • Integration and Quality improvement for existing sensors • Enforce regulation or give incentive (insurance, toll discount, coupon)

  5. Interaction with driver’s physical condition (3) • Eye Movement • Camera measuring speed, direction of the driver’s eye movement and blinking frequency • Interface: helmet, goggle, multiple cameras • Technology is in prototyping stage

  6. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  7. Interaction with the roadside environment (1) • Sound filtering: • Technology is already existing but standardization of signal frequency is necessary (sirens) • Acoustical and visual warning about the approaching emergency vehicle combined with lowering the interior noise (music etc.) • Incentive or law driven • Time to implement system will be long due to standardization process

  8. Interaction with the roadside environment (2) • Transponder for children and pets: • Implant under skin • Technology is on its way • Radar necessary to detect objects • Smart clothing • Law enforcement would be recommended / cooperation issues

  9. Interaction with the roadside environment (3) • Fog sensor network / Broadcast Road Condition: • Burstmode transition (DC) • Sensor devices measure traction • Send actual information about the road • Interface / display the received information / warnings • Liability issues • Automatic on/off mechanism (Night Vision / Fog light)

  10. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  11. Reduction of the driver’s distractions (1) • By cell phone: • Enable / disable function for voice control • Technical device for measuring and categorising the level of distraction (noise, alertness) and / or device about road / traffic conditions eg. speed • Speed limitation for phone calls • If driving condition becomes critical the call might be placed on hold or is disconnected

  12. Reduction of the driver’s distractions (2) • By Passenger: • Adaptive cruise control: keeps you in the track, separates your car and the leading car, observes and reacts to merging traffic • Radar and optical device necessary to adhere cars in lane • Temporarily autopiloting for driver • Legal issues

  13. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  14. STOP Future role of navigation systems (1) • Extended Head-up display with enhanced features

  15. STOP Future role of navigation systems (2) • Extended Head-up display with enhanced features

  16. Future role of navigation systems (2) Smart Card Reader • Customization (Language, Seat/ Mirror, dashboard color) • Personal Information (blood type, diseases, etc.) • Portable and usable in different cars

  17. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  18. Vehicle condition monitoring (1) • Continuously monitors vehicle performance • If problem detected, system sends proper information to Service Center (via cellphone or internet) • Service Center calculates reparation time • Maintenance is scheduled and driver informed

  19. Vehicle condition monitoring (2) • System assesses potential dangers due to malfunctions and alerts cars behind with a three-level alarm • Careful • Warning • Danger E.g. Tires loosing pressure, heart attack of driver, driver falling asleep.

  20. Agenda • The Role of IT for Accident-free Driving • Interaction with driver’s physical condition • Interaction with the roadside environment • Reduction of the driver’s distractions • Future role of navigation systems • Vehicle condition monitoring • Networked traffic signals

  21. STOP Networked traffic signals (1) Intelligent traffic signs

  22. 50 Networked traffic signals (2) Intelligent traffic signs
