  1. Polluted Oceans and Seas By____ Polluted Oceans and Seas

  2. Are all the seas and oceans polluted? • Some seas, like the Mediterranean Sea, are more polluted than others because they only have a very small outlet into the ocean and the pollutants stay in the water (basin). • The oceans that are the main seaways of oil tankers are sometimes very polluted. Polluted Oceans and Seas

  3. The seas near the north pole and the south pole are less polluted because there are less factories and oil tankers near them. The melting icebergs also add a lot of water to the multitude and the pollutant becomes less harmful to the creatures and plants of the sea. Polluted Oceans and Seas

  5. Why are the seas polluted? • Here are some of the reasons: • Countries let sewage flow into rivers and seas Factories pour chemical waste into them - emissions • Oil tankers spill a lot of the oil they carry, especially if there are accidents. • Pesticides that are washed from the soil by rain and floods flow into the seas. • People throw all sorts of garbage into the sea (plastic bottles, bags, tyres, metal). 7. What happens to the water? • The water becomes dirty and polluted. • It contains a lot of dangerous chemicals that can cause cancer and other illnesses. • It has a lot of dangerous germs that can cause harm. • In some places the water becomes oily and inflammable. Polluted Oceans and Seas

  9. Who suffers when the seas are polluted? • People suffer because many beaches are polluted and they cannot use them. • People suffer because they get sick. • There is less and less food that lives/grows in the sea like: fish, seafood, seaweed. Polluted Oceans and Seas

  11. Creatures that live in the sea suffer/die because of the chemicals that harm them and also because a lot of their food (the food chain) is being destroyed by pollutants. • Many plants and corals are destroyed by the chemicals. • Many sea birds and other animals die or get covered in oil when a tanker causes a spillage of oil into the sea. 13. What can be done to clean the seas? • Fines should be put on countries and factories that pollute the seas. • There should be less tankers plying the seas and more pipe lines built to carry oil from one country to another. • Counties should be encouraged to use more solar energy • Farmers must use less pesticides. They should be encouraged to use organic agriculture. Polluted Oceans and Seas

  14. People must help clean the beaches and the seas. Polluted Oceans and Seas
