  2. What is it? • Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) • Research Quality Assessment Exercise • Managed by the ARC on behalf of Dept. Industry, Innovation, Science & Research • Largely ‘metrics’ based • Will assess research quality in Australian universities at multiple levels; Sector, University, discipline cluster, and Field of Research.

Discipline Clusters • There will be separate ERA submissions for 8 discipline clusters: • Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences •  Humanities and Creative Arts (Note This Grouping Includes Law) • Engineering and Environmental Sciences • Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences •  Mathematics, Information and Communication Sciences • Biological Sciences and Biotechnological Sciences •  Biomedical and Clinical Health Sciences •  Public and Allied Health Sciences

Timelines • 2009 Trial • Identify staff to be reported in PCE & HCA submissions • May 1, 2009 • Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences (PCE) • June 1 – July 3, 2009 • Humanities and Creative Arts (including Law) (HCA) • August 3 – August 21, 2009 • 2010 • All 8 clusters including PCE and HCA will be required. http://research.vu.edu.au

Data - Staff Eligibility • Academic Staff – all staff must be reported. • Other employees including, senior management, general, ‘casual’ and FE/VE staff can be included • Adjuncts (where there is an affiliated research publication) • Census date of March 31, 2008 Requested from you • Field of Research (FOR) codes http://research.vu.edu.au

Data - Publications Includes • 2002 - 2007 • Research books, research book chapters, journal papers, refereed conference papers and creative works • Most already captured Requested from you • Assign/confirm FOR codes to Books, Book chapters and Conference publications • Identify missing material e.g. for ‘new’ staff • Identify material appropriate for peer-review (HCA only) – Must be loaded into library repository • All other publications desirable to be included in library repository http://research.vu.edu.au

  8. 3. Data – External Research Income Includes • 2005 – 2007 External Research Income data is ‘as reported in HERD collection’ Requested from you • Confirmation of FOR coding http://research.vu.edu.au

  9. 4. Data - Applied Measures Includes • 2005 - 2007 • Patents • Commercialisation Income eg royalties Requested from you • Details of additional material • FOR codes http://research.vu.edu.au

  10. 5. Data - Background Statements • Optional • 1 statement per 2 digit FOR division • = 3 for PCE • = 6 for HCA • 10,000 character limit • OfR to prepare in consultation with appropriate research leaders http://research.vu.edu.au

Data - Esteem Measures Dropped from ‘Trial’ - Likely to be back for 2010 Includes (2005 – 2007) • Editorial Roles in A or A* Journal • Contribution to prestigious reference work • Curatorial role in prestigious event • Prestigious Award or Prize • Nationally Competitive Fellowship • Elected Fellowship of Learned Academy Requested from you • Details of additional Esteem measure http://research.vu.edu.au
