  2. WHO DO YOU THINK WAS ALREADY IN THE AMERICAS BEFORE EUROPEANS?

  3. Conquistadors: (kahn-kees-tuh-Dawrs) soldiers who led military expeditions in the Americas.

  4. I can explain who Conquistador Hernan Cortes was. A soldier who left Cuba to sail to present day Mexico in 1519. He had heard great stories about wealthy lands owned by a king named Montezuma II.

  5. WHOS MONTEZUMA II ANYWAYS? Moctezuma ruled the Aztec Empire, which was at the hight of its power in the 1500s.

  6. WHERE WAS THE AZTEC EMPIRE? • Montezuma’s capital. Tenochtitlan • (Ta nock tee talan)

  7. WHAT DID TENOCHTITLAN LOOK LIKE? • TEMPLES…PALACES…BUILDINGS THAT WERE BUILT ON AN ISLAND IN A MIDDLE OF A LAKE! • ATZEC EMPIRE WAS A GREAT SOURCE OF GOLD AND SILVER! • ALSO WANTED TO CONVERT THEM TO CHRISTIANITY!

  9. An Indian woman named Malintzin (mah-lint-suhn ) She helped Cortes win allies.

  10. MONTEZUMA REALLY LIKED CORTES!! HE THOUGHT HE WAS A GOD AT FIRST!

  11. BUT THEN…. • Cortes took him prisoner and seized control of Tenochtitlan. The capital was soon destroyed and Montezuma was killed.

  12. FRANCISCO PIZARRO • Yet another conquistador who had heard rumors of the Inca cites in the Andes of South America.

  13. Pizzaros troops, although outnumbered, captured the great Inca capital at Cuzco in present day Peru and killed the Inca leaders. By 1534 Pizzaro and his Native Americans allies had conquered the entire Inca Empire.

  14. BOTH THE INCA AND AZTEC EMPIRES COULD NOT CONTEND WITH EUROPEAN WEAPONS! • The Spanish had successfully wiped out two major American Empires in a few short years. Thousands of Inca and Aztec where murdered and many died of diseases Europeans had brought over.

  15. SPAIN MOVES IN AND CALLS THIS NEW LAND…NEW SPAIN • Three groups were FORBIDDEN to settle in New Spain. 1. Jews 2.Muslims 3. Non Christians

  16. TWO POSTITIVE things that came to the Spanish Empire because of their American exploration • WEALTH • POPULATION INCREASE

  17. ONE MAJOR PROBLEM that was created because of the Spanish Empires exploration of North America. • NATIVE AMERICANS SUFFERED GREATLY!
