Seal Of biliteracy “The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district, or county office of education in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.  Appearing on the transcript of the graduating senior, the Seal of Biliteracy is an indicator of accomplishment for future employers and for college admissions.”

College & career Readiness • College and Career Readiness • Adoption of UC/CSU A-G requirements as district graduation requirements (March 2011). • Now includes the “e” requirement of World Language as a graduation requirement. • University of California: 2 years, highly recommended 3 years. • California State University: 2 years • SDUSD: “Start Early & Stay Late”, encourage students to maintain an extended, long term sequence of study in order to reach high levels of proficiency.

Language learning opportunities, k- 12 “All San Diego students will graduate with the skills, motivation, curiosity, and resilience to succeed in their choice of college and career in order to lead and participate in the society of tomorrow.” “A vision of student success recognizes that in addition to being academically prepared and fully proficient in English, all students benefit from being proficient in another language.”

  7. “Start Early, Stay Late” • Pre-requisite Skills • All students must be provided access to entry level (1-2) world language courses. • Screening assessments may be used to inform and facilitate appropriate placement only, not to exclude students. • Students whose home language is Spanish, more than likely need to be placed in Spanish for Spanish Speakers courses, not introductory level courses • Students must earn a “C” or better to move to the next higher level of language study.

  8. “Start Early, Stay Late” • World Language K-12 Pathways: Multiple Entry Points • Elementary: • Dual Language Immersion Programs • Biliteracy Instructional Programs – Building Block for Spanish for Spanish Speakers • Language Enrichment, eg. Arabic FLES at Carver, Italian as part of Extended Day at Washington Elementary • Middle School to High School Articulated course of study that provides the option to begin language study in middle school and move onto advanced study in high school.

Options for meeting A- G world language Requirement • UC/CSU Options for Meeting the World Language Requirement • Completion of two or more years of study in a SDUSD language course with a grade of “C” or better in grades 7-12. • Transfer grades in LOTE not taught in SDUSD • Completion of study in a SDUSD accredited Independent World Language School (IWLS) • Passing an existing 3rd year world language EOC exam or formal placement assessment (Spanish only).

  10. Options for meeting A- G world language Requirement • Completing a district developed language assessment in a LOTE not taught in SDUSD. • Assessment by a college or university. • Schooling in a LOTE outside the United States. • College Board Examinations: AP, SAT II

  11. HIgh School Placement &pathways to Graduation for EL Students • Provides an overview of the multiple pathways available for EL students, determined by the year in which they enter the high school system.
