  • Perhatikan gambar 11 a, perahu dikenai oleh ombak dari arah kanan misalkan setiap 4 sekon dalam keadaan perahu diam. Dalam keadaan demikian frekuensi dari gelombang adalah

  • ¼ = 0,25 Hz

  • Perhatikan gambar 11 b, perahu bergerak mendekati sumber gelombang ke arah kanan. Secara logika maka pastilah gelombang yang mengenai perahu setiap detiknya menjadi lebih banyak. Waktu untuk sebuah gelombang mengenai perahu menjadi lebih kecil dengan kata lain periodenya lebih kecil dari 4 sekon. Frekuensi dari gelombang juga menjadi lebih besar dipandang dari orang di perahu.

  • Perhatikan gambar 11 c, perahu bergerak menjauhi sumber bunyi ke arah kiri sehingga gelombang yang mengenai perahu pun semakin lama dengan kata lain periodenya besar. Akibatnya frekuensi bunyi menjadi lebih besar.

  • Fenomena perubahan frekuensi bunyi akibat gerak dari sumber atau dari pendengar ini disebut efek Doppler.
