To Review… • Hitler has came to power in Germany • Hitler and Mussolini have allied with intentions of expansion. • Germany has gained the Sudetenland from the Czech Republic • Prime Minister Chamberlin has allowed Hitler to keep the Sudetenland as part of Appeasement. • The USSR and Germany have signed a non-aggression pact.

  3. Invasion of Poland • One week after Germany and USSR signed pact, Germany invades Poland. • USSR follows about 2 weeks after that. • German/Soviet Side– 2,000,000 units • Polish Side– 950,000

  4. Germany invades from 3 sides. After Russia invades a week later, Poland is surrounded. • After the initial ground invasion, Germany follows with an air raid to further destroy Poland. • Invasion began on 9/1/39 and ends on 10/6/39.

  5. Casualty Numbers • Germany– About 50,000 dead, wounded, or missing. • USSR– 5,327 dead, wounded or missing • Slovakia– 182 dead, wounded or missing • 66,000 dead • 133,700 wounded • 694,000 captured German/Russian/Slovakian Polish

  6. Aftermath • Poland is completely occupied by Germany/USSR. • France and Germany declare war on Germany.
