E-SURFMAR Status and Plans (December 2014)

Highlights of E-SURFMAR's activities in 2014, including improvements in drifting buoy distribution and longer lifetimes, experimentation with deck drifters, revision of compensation scheme for VOS observations, and progress in data management and format conversion. Plans for 2015 include Arctic drifter deployments, start of AtlantOS project, deployment of refurbished buoys, and development of autonomous barometric station.

E-SURFMAR – Highlights 2014 (1) • Drifting buoys  • Better distribution than ever : e.g. we never had so many buoys in high latitudes • Longer lifetimes : one buoy stopped working after 2.5 years at sea • Savings due to this better efficiency => ~60 k€ by the end of the year • Reflections about the re-use of recovered buoys : ~10 buoys available in Brest • VOS ships • Experimentation with a « deck drifter » (refurbished drifting buoy) on a French Navy ship during her campaign in Arctic  • Revision of the compensation scheme for VOS observations • Writing of rules for collaboration on PMO activities (ship visits) • Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for EUCAWS stations (planned on 17-19 December)

  3. E-SURFMAR – Highlights 2014 (2) • Moored buoys • New third party partner : Instituto Hidrografico (IH), Portugal. Their buoy data are forwarded onto the GTS by IPMA • Experimentation by Met Office with a new type of moored buoy  • Data management • Continuation of the TAC2BUFR migration Information on progress regularly published on ECMWF wikisite FM13 messages from conventional VOS now converted into BUFR • FM13 messages received at KNMI forwarded to Meteo-France for BUFR conversion • Formalisation of E-SURFMAR ship-to-shore dataformats #100 (S-AWS) and #101 (conventional VOS). Implementation of this latter in TurboWin v5.5 • Other activities • Participation in the Surface Drifter component of AtlantOS proposal (reply to H2020 call BG-8-2014 - In-situ Atlantic ocean observations) Evaluated favourably by EC last week

E-SURFMAR – Plans 2015 (1) • Drifting buoys (in addition to routine tasks) • Deployment of 6 to 10 drifters in the Arctic  • Start of the work for AtlantOS (April) • Deployment of recovered buoys after refurbishment • VOS ships • Site Acceptance Test (SAT) for EUCAWS (6 months) • Development of a fully autonomous barometric station  • Distribution of TurboWin v5.5 on conventional VOS • Purchase of a first EUCAWS from series ?

E-SURFMAR – Plans 2015 (2) • Data BUFR migration • Use of new template TM 315009 for all drifting buoy data • Application of template TM 315008 to moored buoy data • Application of template TM 308014 to VOS data if officially agreed • End of use of previous templates • End of use of TAC codes ? • Other activities • Start of the exploitation of E-SURFMAR ship-to-shore dataformats #100 and #101 • Exploitation of E-SURFMAR study results to possibly adapt the present network design
