  1. Soil Chemical properties

  2. Soil texture is a very important factor controlling how fast water can infiltrate into a soil profile. A soil’s ability to absorb and store water is important for the plants that grow there, and for the landscape surrounding the soil. It’s also important for investigations because the composition and things that grow in it make it different from other soils Soil Water Absorption

  3. Soil Pore Spaces: An empty space between soil particles that can be filled by water and air. Soil Water Absorption

  4. Absorption: The ability of soil to let water soak in. The more pore space a soil has, the faster water can soak down into the profile. Soil Water Absorption

  5. If water is absorbed too fast, it may travel far down into the soil profile, carrying water and nutrients to a depth lower than most plants can access them. Soil Water Absorption

  6. If water is absorbed too slowly, it may move across the surface of the soil, and start carrying soil and evidence away through the process of erosion. Soil Water Absorption

  7. Sometimes a soil’s pore spaces are reduced through human or natural processes. This process is called “compaction” of the soil. Soil Water Absorption

  8. Soil Compaction: The process by which soil decreases in pore space and does not absorb water very well. Soil Water Absorption

  9. Soil pH

  10. Definition: pH: pH is the measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. Soil pH

  11. pH is reported in a scale that ranges from 0 to 14. Soil pH

  12. Acid: A substance with a pH between 0 and 7. Alkaline: A substance with a pH between 7 and 14. Neutral: A substance with a pH of 7. Soil pH

  13. All substances have a pH, even you! Here is a scale with the pH of several common pH values recorded. Soil pH

  14. The pH of the soil can affect the availability of nutrients in the soil to the plants that grow there. The pH and the plants that can grow in soil all affect how we as forensic scientists use the soil as evidence. This can be very important to scientists, forensic scientists, agriculturalists and land managers. Soil pH

  15. We can use a pH measuring devise to record a pH value for any substance we would like to test, including soils. Soil pH
