  2. Do Now • What are some of the Mesopotamian achievements you have learned about so far?

  3. Transportation • Sumerians were the first to attach wheels to carts • Wellestablished trade routes • Various kinds of boats • Made trade and travel easier

  4. Writing and Literature • Sumerians made the first known written records • Cuneiform (wedge-shaped symbols) • Scribes recorded things for others • Writing made developments in government, economy, and society possible

  5. Uses of writing • Scribes Recorded: 1. Boundary lines 2. Wars 3. Lists of kings 4. Gifts to temples 5. Literature (songs and stories) 6. Trade 7. Food supplies

  6. Activity • You are giving a tour of the ruins of a Sumerian city center. Write a presentation about Sumerian society. You must include at least 3topics, and it must be at least 1 page in length. In addition, you must add a conclusion that details why these achievements are significant. • Possible topics to include: 1. Architecture 2. Religion 3. Government 4. Transportation 5.
