  1. Welcome to CWLC Logging on to the network system and choosing passwords

  2. Welcome to CWLC The school computers are a system linked together by a central server, this is different to your computer at home as all of your work done in school is saved on the central server and not on an individual computer’s hard drive. You will need a username and password to access your work area.

  3. Welcome to CWLC Your username and password will allow you to get access to the computer system anywhere in the school Your username is a combination of 8 characters The year you started at CWLC The first two letters of your first name The first two letters of your last name

  4. Welcome to CWLC So… A student with the name Robert Jones starting CWLC in 2008 will have the username 08robjon When you first log on today you will all have to use your username as your password in this format 08RobJon Your first task will be to choose a new password

  5. Welcome to CWLC You must choose a strong Password The best security in the world is useless if a malicious person has a your user name and password.  They can do everything you can do. Some people’s passwords are just easy to guess, like “password”. Others use plain words that can be guessed by a hacker’s program that tries every word in the dictionary.

  6. Welcome to CWLC • A good password: • Needn’t be a word at all. It can be a combination of letters, numbers and keyboard symbols. • Is at least seven characters long.  Longer passwords are harder to guess or break. • Does not contain your user name or real name. • Contains a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and keyboard symbols • Is changed regularly.

  7. Welcome to CWLC • A weak password • Using no password at all. • Using a commonplace dictionary word. • Something that is easy to work out with a little background knowledge.  For example: favourite football team, birthday, spouse's name etc. • The most common password is ‘Password’ so that’s an obvious one to avoid. • A password you haven’t changed in more than a couple of months.

  8. Welcome to CWLC • Look after your passwords • Never tell anyone your password • Don't enter your password when others can see what you are typing. • Change passwords regularly. • Don’t recycle passwords (e.g. password2, password3). • Don’t send your password by email. • If you think that someone else knows your password, change it immediately.

  9. Welcome to CWLC Remember your password If you forget your password you will not be able to access your work Make your password something it will be easy to remember If you are likely to forget your password write it in your planner
