Basic Steps • determine light collected at the detector per 100 ns time bin • F(t) (units 370nm-equivalent photons at diaphragm) • determine fluorescence light emitted at the track per grammage interval • L(X) (units of photons in 16 wavelength bins) • requires subtraction of Cherenkov contamination • determine charged particle number per grammage interval • S(X) (longitudinal profile) • Fit Gaisser-Hillas profile with fixed X0=0

  3. E= 2.0 x 1018 eV (4%); Xmax = 704 +/- 10 grams

  4. E= 1.5 x 1019 eV (2%); Xmax = 790 +/- 6 grams

  5. E= 2.6 x 1018 eV (6%); Xmax = 710 +/- 22 grams

  6. log(Nmax) for 20 events

  7. log(E) for 20 events

  8. Xmax for 20 events

  9. Estimated errors Nmax (mean = 3.4%) Xmax (mean 15 grams)
