Gerund 2. Grammar and Vocabulary Ⅱ October 25, 2011. Gerund. Verbal noun which has exactly the same form as the present participle: running, speaking, working , etc. It can be used in the following ways: (a) as subject of a sentence : Fishing is a lot of fun.

  2. Gerund • Verbal noun which has exactly the same form as the present participle: running, speaking, working, etc. • It can be used in the following ways: (a) as subject of a sentence: Fishing is a lot of fun. (b) as complement of a verb: My hobby is painting.

  3. (c) after prepositions: He is interested in collecting stamps. (d) after certain verbs: He kept talking. (e) in noun compounds: living room, driving license, swimming pool

  4. Mini conversation practice • I am fond of reading detective stories. And you? • I am interested in visiting old temples. And you? • I never get tired of seeing Kurosawa movies. How about you? • I enjoy listening to music. How about you?

  5. A: I don’t have any plans for this weekend. What would you like to suggest doing? B: How about going on a picnic? 青字の部分をいろいろ変えて尋ねてみま しょう!

  6. Exercise 4(p.58) (1) To quit drinking alcohol is difficult. 〔動名詞を用いて〕 ⇒ Quitting drinking alcohol is difficult. (2) It is convenient to send e-mails. 〔Itを用いず、動名詞で〕 ⇒ Sending e-mails is convenient.

  7. (3) I love to take a walk on sunny days. 〔動名詞を用いて〕 ⇒ I love taking a walk on sunny days. (4) It makes me happy to sing karaoke. 〔Itを用いず、動名詞で〕 ⇒ Singing karaoke makes me happy.
