Electronic Balance

Important:

Easily broken by placing too much mass on the pan

Use: to mass less than 200 grams of a substance

slide2

Material: metal with porcelain top

Hot Plate

Use: to heat substances when a burner is not necessary or safe. Sometimes may have a magnetic stirrer as well.

slide3

Safety Goggles

Material: plastic, splash resistant

Use: to be worn at all times during labs in which chemicals, heat or glassware is used.

slide4

Filter Paper

Material: paper circles, various sizes

Use: folded in quarters, used in funnels to filter solutions

slide5

Mortar and Pestle

Material: porcelain

Use: to grind crystals and lumpy chemicals to a powder

slide6

Weighing Trays or Weigh Boats

Material: Flexible plastic in various sizes

Use: to keep chemicals off the balance pan.

slide7

Scoopula

Material: Metal or metal with wood handle

Use: to transfer solid chemicals

slide8

Thermometer

Important:

Never use as a stirring rod

Material: alcohol (red) or mercury in glass (not likely), common range -10°C to 110°C

Use: to measure temperature

slide9

Pipet

Important:

Never pipet by mouth

Material: glass or plastic, graduated, various sizes

Use: to measure solution volumes, less accurate than a volumetric pipet

slide10

Pipet Safety Bulb

Important:

Never pipet by mouth

Material: rubber

Use: to fill a pipet with solution

slide11

Stirring Rod

Material: solid glass or plastic

Use: to stir solutions

slide13

Crucible and cover

Important:

Use tongs with hot crucibles

Material: porcelain

Use: to heat small amounts of solid substance at high temperatures

slide14

Crucible tongs

Important:

beware of hot porcelain or glassware

Material: iron, nickel or brass

Use: to pick up and hold small usually very hot items

slide15

Clay triangle

Material: wire frame with porcelain supports

Use: used to support a crucible

slide16

Transfer Pipet

Material: plastic

Use: to dispense and transfer small volumes of solution

slide17

Beral pipet - thin stem

Material: plastic

Use: to dispense and store small quantities of solution

slide18

24-well spot plate

Material: plastic, may have cover

Use: reaction vessels for small quantities of solution

slide19

96-well spot plate

Material: plastic

Use: in place of test tubes in microchemistry

slide20

Bunsen burner and burner tubing

Material: metal, connected to gas supply with burner tubing

Use: to heat chemicals (dry or in solution) in beakers, test tubes, flasks and crucibles

slide21

Striker

Material: metal with flint

Use: to create a spark to light gas burners

slide22

Wire gauze or wire mesh

Material: metal mesh, may have ceramic center

Use: to spread the heat of a burner flame

slide23

Watch glass

Material: glass

Use: to cover an evaporating dish or beaker

slide24

Test tube clamp or test tube holder

Material: metal spring mechanism

Use: to hold test tubes or glass tubing

slide25

Test tube

Important:

Beware of hot glass. Use a test tube holder when heating. Never point a test tube at yourself or other when heating.

Material: glass, various sizes

Use: reaction vessel, may be heated

slide26

Test tube rack

Material: wood, plastic or metal

Use: holds test tubes in a vertical position

slide27

Test tube brush

Material: bristle with wire handle, various sizes

Use: to scrub small diameter glassware

slide28

Utility clamp

Material: metal, with or without coated ends

Use: to support equipment on a ring stand, this one would need a clamp holder as well

slide29

Ring clamp and clamp holder

Material: metal

Use: as a support on a ring stand

slide31

Funnel

Material: glass or plastic

Use: Hold filter paper for filtering solutions

slide32

Wash bottle

Material: flexible plastic

Use: hold vertically and squeeze sides to dispense water, typically deionized water only

slide33

Graduated cylinder or graduate

Important:

Never heat

Material: glass or plastic, various sizes

Use: to measure approximate volumes

slide34

Erlenmeyer flask

Material: glass, various sizes

Use: may be heated, useful for swirling solutions, used in traditional titrations

slide35

Volumetric flask

Material: glass or plastic, various sizes

Use: for making and storing solution. The score on the neck indicates an accurate volume.

slide36

Beaker

Important:

Beware of hot glass, use tongs

Material: glass or plastic, various sizes

Use: for holding solutions or dry chemicals, not for measuring, only gives approximate volume

slide37

Beaker tongs

Material: metal with or without rubber coated tips

Use: to move hot beakers and glassware

slide38

Evaporating dish

Material: porcelain

Use: to contain small volumes of liquid being heated or evaporated. May be heated.

slide39

Ring Stand

Glass or plastic with stopper and stopcock

Used to separate solutions of different phases

Separatory Funnel

Metal rod fixed upright in a heavy metal base

Used to support a variety of clamps

slide40

Material: glass with stopcock,graduated,VERY EXPENSIVE

Use: to measure volumes of solution in titrations

Buret

Doubleburet clamp

Material: metal or plastic

Use: to support burets on a ring stand

Stopcock
