2. He was born in Easton, Maryland in February, 1818

3. Born the son a white of man and a slave woman. • His full name is Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. • As a boy, Frederick secretly taught himself how to read and write.

4. He escaped from slavery in September of 1838 at the age of 20. Frederick’s public-speaking skills impressed the members of the Anti-Slavery Society. Because of this, the society asked him to give regular lectures in 1841. Also, Douglass became one of the best-known speaker in the United States. He wrote several autobiographies, too.

5. Frederick Douglass spoke at a Forth of July celebration in 1852.

6. “The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. . . . This Fourth of July is yours not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.”

7. Frederick Douglass published his own pro-abolition newspaper, The North Star, in 1847. It was published until 1860.
