  1. UPSC Exam after Engineering: Is Preparing for IAS Exam after B.E a Good Choice? upscpathshala.com/content/upsc-after-engineering-is-it-a-good-idea September 8, 2020 With growing awareness about the grand career in civil services in India, a huge chunk of students are considering it as a primary career option and planning their career path by the civil services. Gone are the days of the last decades, where only art graduates used to opt for a career in civil services. The statistics of the situation are changed now. A student from various fields like engineering, medical, law, etc. is considering the UPSC exam as a better career option. Volatile Job Market Why, most of these students ignore the jobs where they can apply their academic knowledge and rather choose a profession which is thoroughly comprehensive in nature? The answer lies in the current volatile job market. Especially for engineers, things are not as they were 20 years ago. We are living in a country which produces engineers on a mass basis every year. But, on the other hand, the availability of jobs is worrisome. According to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, around 2.9 million students enrolled in 2013 in 6,214 Engineering and Technology College in India in 2013. But, are there enough jobs to provide sufficient wage and status as per an engineer’s expectations? The answer is No. 1/3

  2. Current Scenario of Engineer’s Job in India The current scenario for the engineer’s job market is really in bad shape. The reason lies in our confused state in understanding the causes and inert attitude towards changing the worsening condition. The high supply and less demand have also made the job insecure. A large number of unemployed engineers are ready to do the job in half wages and to work for 12-14 hours. Why should an engineer with a good calibre and a standard deliverance of quality work as cheap labour? What is the social and financial security these jobs have when compared to the social and economic security of civil services? There is a huge difference for sure. This whole changed scenario is compelling the unemployed or currently studying engineering students to begin their UPSC civil service preparations without wasting their time in the job search. Well, studying engineering is all about patience. If we surf on social media, we can find so many funny posts based on the vital life of an engineer and how they are dealing with it full-heartedly. Jokes apart, that’s not all false. If we go through the syllabus and the time management techniques for studies by an engineer, we will get why they have the upper hand over other competitors. Firstly, an engineer has very high endurance. Which means they can study continuously for long hours. An engineer who fits the UPSC eligibility criteria can manage to study the vast syllabus of UPSC civil service exam in a short span of time. After spending four years in engineering, an engineer leaves college, not just with the degree but a lot of things which help them in their further life. Other Advantages The emotional and mental endurance to accomplish greater tasks in the given time and ace the exams is nothing new for an engineer. This experience will certainly be beneficial while studying for UPSC, were studying for vast and numerous syllabus for long hours is a usual schedule of a candidate. The engineering students are usually good at the multitasking and unique technique of planning their curriculum. They are capable of planning the UPSC exam studies with a rational approach and manage to study by dividing the syllabus and revision into small 2/3

  3. tasks scheduled smartly. Aptitude? Hmmm, That’s Easy! The aptitude paper of UPSC is all about the basic mathematics of 12th standard level, analytical skills, and English language. An engineer’s journey begins with maths. They are well-versed in basic mathematical concepts as they use it to solve a more complex mathematical problem during their engineering days. So, the speed and accuracy required to get a good result are not so difficult for engineers. Also, a few questions asked on Science in General Studies paper are also based on 12 standard physics & chemistry. Dealing with such problems is not such a big deal for engineers. Where these questions and the basic scientific concepts are entirely new for students from other streams who eventually have to give a large sum of their preparation time for these subjects. Conclusion To conclude, engineers with at least a year’s work experience in the industry are well aware of know-hows of the stressful work atmosphere which require analytical thinking. We also need to stop the heavy brain-drain of engineers who are leaving the country in search of jobs. Hence, such better engineers with a zeal to bring a positive change in the system can deliver the era of technocrats to replace the traditional bureaucrats. A good technocrat is capable of making sound decisions by modern outlook and can apply innovative methods to bring solutions. 3/3
