What is NVH? • Noise, Vibration and Harshness • Anything which reciprocates or rotates can produce vibration • Vibration can be either random or periodic • Resultant vibratory forces will excite structural components • Structural vibration creates radiated noise • Harshness is how we perceive noise

Solutions to NVH Problems • Isolation – Separating the vibration from the user by use of a soft coupling or insulation • Alteration – Changing the character of the vibration through rearrangement of the masses and springs • Expulsion – Moving the vibration outside of the operating range • Reduction–Addition of a secondary mass and spring tuned to • reduce objectionable vibration or noise
