  • SDL can be applied in Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks.

    • In OBS network, several input IP packets are aggregated to form a burst packet. Data are switched base on the whole burst packet instead of individual IP packets inside the networks.

  • SDL can be used perfectly as the framing protocol for the burst payload.

    • In burstification, a SDL header is pre-pended onto each IP packet in the ingress OBS switch. In the egress switch, the SDL protocol is performed to provide the reverse burstification.

  • The packet loss rate analysis in the OBS networks:

  • Packet loss rate (PLR) = # of loss packet / # of total packet

  • Case 1: just aggregate multiple IP packet to form a burst packet

    • reply upon the IP header (16-bit packet-length field) to distinguish each packet boundary in the burst packet.

    • if the packet-length field incurs more than 1-bit error, the current packet and the following packet are lose.

      L = packet length (bytes)

      N: the amount of IP packet in one burst packet

      eb: the bit error rate

      H: average hop count between ingress switch and egress switch in OBS network

  • Eb: the bit error rate in the OBS network = H*eb

  • The probability of the 16-bit packet-length doesn’t has any error is (1-Eb)16

  • the mean value of the number of the packet loss in one burst packet,

    PLoss =

    PLR = PLoss/N

    the network throughput = 1-PLR

  • Case 2: use SDL technology to delineate the IP packet boundary in one burst packet

    • We will lost the current IP packet, if the SDL header has error and 16-bit IP packet-length has error.

    • Assume the false header matching in the payload field is negligible

  • The probability of loss one IP packet

    Ploss = [1- (1-Eb)16][1-(1-Eb)32]
