  2. Q1. Why is water the best liquid to put in a hot water bottle? Some people use a stone wrapped in a piece of blanket instead. How does this method compare with the genuine hot water bottle?

  3. Q2. A full bath takes about 200 kg of water. On a winter’s day the water has to be heated from 10 oC to 40 oC. Show that about 25 MJ is used to heat the water.

  4. Q3. A shower delivers 1 kg of hot water every 10 s. The water is heated from 10 oC to 45 oC. Show that only about 9 MJ is needed to provide a 10 minute shower.

  5. Q4. A jug containing 0.5 kg of milk at a temperature of 20 oC is put into a refrigerator, which cools it down to 5 oC. Show that about 30 kJ of energy is taken from the milk.

  6. Q5. In the days before metal containers were available, our ancestors heated water by dropping hot stones into pottery containing water. Show that a rough estimate of the energy given to the water when a stone of mass 1.5 kg at 200 oC is dropped into water at 10 oC is about 170 kJ. Explain why this is an overestimate.

  7. Q6. During a hot summer the land gets hotter than the nearby sea. Suggest some reasons for this. In calm weather, during the day in summer there is often a cooling breeze coming off the sea. At night this wind changes direction. Explain these effects.
