TYPES OF CRIME: • FBI Organizes crime into 29 Offense Classifications according to their Uniform Crime Reports • Level 1 Offenses: More Serious Crime Examples: Murder, Rape, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault • Level 2 Offenses: Less Serious Crime Examples: Vandalism, Gambling, Drunkeness, Curfew Violations, Embezzlement, Drug Abuse

  3. UCR Tracking • Nine types of crimes are tracked: • Violent Crime • Murder, Forcible Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault • Property Crime • Burglary • Larceny-theft • Motor Vehicle Theft

  4. CATEGORIES OF CRIME • Violent Crime • “Victimless” • Crime Against Property • White-Collar • Organized

VIOLENT CRIME • Murder, Rape, Aggravated Assault (Level 1 Offenses) occur 1/22 secs in United States • Most victims of violent crimes are African American • Aggravated Assault  1/35 secs in US • Rape 1/5 min in US • Murder 1/33 min in US • 65% time a gun is used highest among industrialized world • 13% knives are used • Most victims of murder are African American Men • Victimization Rate • 8/1 AA Men to AA women • 8/1 AA Men to White Men • 30/1 AA Men to White Women

  6. CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY • Stealing/ damaging someone else’s property • Burglary, larceny, motor vehicle, arson • FBI est. 1/3 secs in US

  7. “VICTIMLESS” • crimes being committed hurt only those who have committed the crime • prostitution, illegal gambling, drug use

  8. WHITE COLLAR • Offenses committed by individuals of high status in their professional lives • Misrepresentation, embezzlement, fraud, insider trading

  9. ORGANIZED CRIME • Crime syndicates- large scale organization of professional criminals that control some vice or business through violence • Mafia, gangs, Gambling rings (bookies)

  10. WHO IS A CRIMINAL? • -men more likely than women • - 2/3 of all arrestees are white • - 1/3 of all arrestees are black (make up 12% of the population) • - ½ of all arrestees are under 25 • -3/4 of all arrestees are under 35

  11. CRIME STATISTICS HOW ARE THE STATS COMPILED? • Uniform Crime Reports of the Federal Bureau of Investigation • Use local police department information • Contain limitations • not all crimes are reported • officers can decide when to write an official report • fair/unfair?

Think about it! • UCR reports are sometimes considered flawed: • Reports submitted voluntarily by law enforcement agencies • Over represent lower classes and minorities • Some crimes not likely to be reported • Some crimes happen in private settings • White collar crimes are not always included
