  2. Tree Diagram As you can see there are 12 different meals that can be formed.

  3. The Multiplicative Principal • We could calculate the outcome sans a tree diagram. • Multiply the options for each choice together: Total Options= (# Choice 1) x (# Choice 2) x (# Choice 3) 2 x 3 x 2 = 12

  4. Indirect Counting • There are 10 players on a soccer team including 4 siblings, Julia, Lucia, Theo and Samuel. How many ways are there of picking the first two to take penalty shots without picking 2 siblings? Shooter 1 Shooter 2

  5. Solution ~ Shooters • There are 10 choices for shooter 1 and then there will be 9 choices for shooter 2 (the same player can’t shoot both times) • 10 x 9 =90 • There are 90 ways to pick the first 2 shooters.

  6. Solution ~ Siblings • There are 4 siblings that could be the first shooter and then 3 that could be the second. • There are 4 x 3 = 12 ways to pick 2 of the siblings.

  7. Mutually Exclusive • We call the events of picking 2 siblings and not picking 2 siblings Mutually Exclusive (ME) (because you can’t do both) Additive Principal • The number of ways of 1 ME event can occur + the number of ways another ME event can occur is equal to the number of ways that one or the other event can occur.

  8. Back to Soccer • The number of ways of picking 2 siblings + the number of ways of not picking 2 siblings is equal to the total number of ways of picking two shooters 12+x=90 x=90-12 =78 There are 78 ways of picking first and second shooter without picking 2 siblings.
