  4. An innovative Partnership of developing countries, funding partners and FAO was created….. … to facilitate the implementation of national forest programmes. - It iscalled the NFP Facility -

The Facility is a new approach towards Sustainable Forest Management • Away from projects • Country led • Informed participation of stakeholders • The Facility has 3 strategic orientations: • Building a national consensus • Integrating forestry into poverty reduction • Integrating international commitments

  6. The Facility supports: • Partner countries and their interest groups, through grants, to further the nfp process • nfp practitioners world-wide, through global knowledge management initiatives

  7. Catalytic Support Actions • nfps = dynamic Processes responsive to change • Capacity building, human & institutional • Policy and institutional reforms • Championing the forestry sector • Mobilizing national and international financial resources

  8. Support to • Civil society participation in nfp • Formulation and implementn. of policies • Strengthening skills • Knowledge access, use and sharing

  9. Funding per Partner country • US$ 300,000 per country, on average • for a 3-year period • Funds for Grantsprovided to nfp stakeholders • Grants to be spent on • Workshops, fora, and training • Policy analysis and specific studies • Information sharing initiatives

  11. Governance of the Facility • A Donor Support Group of Existing and Potential Donors • A Steering Committee of 11 members(Developing Countries (3), Funding Partners (2), World Bank, Research Institutions, NGOs, Foundations, Private Sector and FAO)

  13. The Facility is hosted by FAO, and operates with • A core staff at the HQ of FAO • The active support of • FAO Regional nfp Advisors, and additional Regional Facilitators • The FAO Forestry Department at large

  14. Under a joint effort with FAO Guidelines Support to nfps International Partners Knowledge & Information Grants

  15. Achievements • 46 partnerships (42 ctries. & 4 Sub-regional organizations) • US$ 5 million allocated in partner countries and to partner organizations • 200 Facility grants to stakeholders, of which 75% in civil society

  16. Lessons learnt: • High demand for Facility support • Clear linkage with forest governance • Participation most efficient where organized NG stakeholders Key challenge: Forestry departments = Facilitators instead of sole implementers

  17. Information Services • Facilitating the exchange of knowledge and information • Linking international and national knowledge sources • Developing a forest Information Web Platform, and dynamic methods of information exchange

How to Apply for Funds Steps to be Taken • Once Concept Note is accepted • Creation of a Sub-steering Committee • Meeting of the Sub-steering committee to agree on the workplan and ToR • Launching call for proposals in press, radio, networks • Ranking and selection of proposals by the Sub-steering Committee and endorsement by National Team • Contracts given by Facility

  20. Eligibility criteria for Facility grants The beneficiary must be… • located in the country • a stakeholder in forestry • a non-profit making organisation • ready to contribute 20% of cost
