  1. NAME : GANDHI VRAJ C SEMISTER : 3rd DIV : C E.NO : 106470319050 SUB.NAME : M.T. SEMINAR NAME : Surface Hardening S.T.B.S COLLAGE

  2. It’s the process of hardening the surface of the metal, mostly low carbon steel. To prevent our material from scratches, abrasion, cutting, penetration and wear; Hardening is used. This process increases carbon(C) % on surface of material. INTRODUCTION :

  3. As % of Carbon increases , metal’s surface is hardened more. In this process, Carbon Monoxide(CO) decomposes & Ionic Carbon produces. Diffused atoms make chemical bond with metal atoms. “So, it’s the process of change in micro structure of metal’s surface without changing its chemical structure.” PROCEDURE:

  4. CLASSIFICATION : • INDUCTION HARDNING : High frequency induction current is used for heating. 2. FLAME HARDENING: Gas torch is used for heating.

  5. INDUCTION HARDENING : High frequency current is passed through Inductor coil. (100000 to 400000 cycle/sec.) Magnetic lines are passed from surface of material and a.c. current induces in it. So, Hysteresis losses results into heating of material surface. For “Quenching” process, water is passed from inductor block. Used for steel having carbon 0.35 to 0.55%.

  6. APPLICATION : • Crank shaft • Gears • Accel • Automobile • Parts of tractors

  7. FLAME HARDENING : • Gas torch is used to heat surface and then quenching process is done. • Oxi-acitilene flame is used for heating process. • Material is heated up to its critical temperature. • It’s used for material having carbon up to 0.4 to 0.6%.

  8. APPLICATION : • Steel die • Gears • Tapered screw • Roker • Valve

  9. ADVANTAGES : • Heating time is very less. • Increase in fatigue limit. • Resist against wear & penetration. • Possibility of changes in shape is less because heat process. • Possibility of fracture is less.

  10. DISADVANTAGES: • Cost is high. • More skilled persons are required for successful manufacturing. • Controlling of temperature is difficult. • Over heating can damage material.

  11. CONCLUSION : So we can conclude that surface hardening process is used to give strength of material high and give more resist against wear. So we can use any of two methods for surface hardening & make the material strong.
