  1. Mth 1302.2 More about subsets. Venn diagrams. Sneak preview of pascal’s triangle. Quiz 1 will be Thursday, 1.20.2011

  2. Vocabulary & main ideas: • When are two sets equal? • Subsets and proper subsets • Counting how many subsets • Venn diagram • Universal set • Complement • Sneak preview of Pascal’s triangle • Tree diagrams

  3. When are two sets equal?

  4. Venn diagram • Suppose A={1, 2, 3,…12} • B={2, 4, 6, . . . 12} • Use a Venn diagram to show how these sets are related.

  5. Lets list the subsets for each of these sets: { } {A} {A,B} {A,B,C} {A,B,C,D}

  6. List the subsets of {A, B, C} using a tree diagram.

  7. Element or not • 5 _____ {1, 2, 3, 4, …10} • 0 _____ the set of natural numbers • 123 ____ {5, 9, 13, 17, … 445} • Ok, this next example is very very picky. • {3} _____ { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 }

  8. Subset, or not. • {17} _____ {counting numbers} • {2, 5, 12} ______ {1, 2, 3, . . .20} • 25 _______ {1, 2, 3, …100} • {-3} _______ {integers}

  9. Set operations • Intersection - keyword “and” • Union - keyword “or” • Difference -

  10. Bond, James Bond • During freshman orientation at a small liberal arts college , two showings of the latest James Bond movie were presented. Among the 600 freshmen, 80 attended the first showing and 125 attended the second showing, while 450 didn’t make it to either showing. How many of the 600 freshmen attended twice? Use a Venn diagram to analyze this.
