Why is there stranded capacity? • IT operation decisions have engineering impact on: • Efficiency (increased Opex through energy costs) • Resilience (increased risk of thermal downtime) • Longevity (increase in Capex caused by stranded capacity) • Causes: • IT Deployment decisions do not take into account the engineering impact of operational decisions • IT Deployment decisions do not consider air flow/cooling management

Lack of Airflow Management • Did you know that all mission critical facilities lose more than 30% of their data center capacity because of hotspots? • Why? • IT Equipment is air cooled • There are no standards for cooling design of IT Equipment. • IT equipment designs change over time. • IT equipment deployment changes over time. • Data Center cooling infrastructure is fixed over its lifetime. • The owner/operator has the responsibility to deliver sufficient airflow and cooling to every piece of IT equipment at all times.
