  3. Causes/ Transmission Back • The cause of Chlamydia is by a bacterium. The bacteria is called Chlamydia Trachomatis. • Chlamydia can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Treatment Back • In women a cervical swab is taken and men a urethral swab is taken and tested. • In some locations a new highly accurate urine sample is available. • Antibiotics- Doxycline, axithromycin, ofloxacin, erythromycin. • Should be treated immediately • 95% of the people treated are cured.

  5. Untreated Back • Some women will develop pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection of the uterus, ovaries and/ or fallopian tubes). May lead to liver disease. Chronic pelvic pain and possible sterilization • Men may develop painful swelling of the testicles and inflammation of the urethra and epididymis.

More Info Back • In pregnant women, there is some evidence that untreated Chlamydial infections can lead to premature delivery. • Babies who are born to infected mothers can get Chlamydial infections in their eyes and respiratory tracts. • Chlamydia is a leading cause of early infant pneumonia and pink eye in newborns.
