  1. Scottish Parliamentary Election 2011

  2. The 2011 election to the Scottish Parliament was held on Thursday the 5th of May 2011.

  3. 2011 STATS: • Turnout: 50% (down 1.3% from ’07) • Votes cast: 1,991,051 • Constituency with Highest Turnout: Edinburgh Southern 61.6% • Constituency with Lowest Turnout: Glasgow Provan 34.8% • Gender: 34.1% newly-elected MSPs are women, with 65.9% being male. That translates into 85 males and 44 females making up the new parliament. • The number of women in the parliament has increased by one from the 43 elected in the 2007 Scottish Parliament elections.

  4. There are 129 seats in the Scottish parliament. • 73 of these seats represent constituencies such as Paisley or Strathkelvin and Bearsden. • 56 seats represent the regions of Scotland, of which there are 8 e.g. West of Scotland or Highlands and Islands. So that means 7 MSPs come from each region (8x7=56)! • That’s why people have two votes in the Scottish election – 1 for a Constituency MSP and 1 for a Regional MSP.

  5. Previous results • Since opening in 1999, the Scottish Parliament has witnessed 3 governments. • From 1999-2007 we had a COALITION between Labour and Lib Dems. • And between 2007-2011 we had the SNP as a MINORITY government. • We have never had a result which has produced a MAJORITY government… • …until now…

  6. 2011 Results - Overview • The 2011 Scottish Election resulted in a LANDSLIDE victory for the Scottish National Party. • They managed to win 69 out of 129 seats which gave them a MAJORITY in the Scottish Parliament. • This result was beyond all expectations, even of the most optimistic SNP supporters!

  7. 2011 Results - Overview • Winning a massive 69 seats meant that the SNP gained many seats from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats. • It also meant that Alex Salmond will return as Scotland’s First Minister. • The next slide shows a map of the constituencies each party won…

  8. Political Map 2011 and Constituency Result: SNP won 53 constituency seats! Up 32 from 2007! Lib Dems – only 2 constituency seats! Down 9 from 2007! Total = 73 seats! Labour won 15 constituency seats! Down 20 from 2007! Conservatives won 3 constituency seats! Down 3!

  9. 2007 Political Map. SNP no where near as dominant.

  10. Regional Result • In the regional results, because of the way the voting system works, Labour won most seats. Out of the 56 seats available, parties won the following:

  11. Overall Result Out of 129 seats, the composition of the Scottish Parliament is as follows: SNP- 69 MSPs (+23) Labour – 37 MSPs (-7) Conservatives – 15 MSPs (-5) Lib Dems – 5 MSPs (-12) Greens – 2 MSPs Independent – 1 MSP

  12. The composition of the new Parliament: As you can see, the SNP frequent over half of the seats (69/129).
